Match 2023: Checklist for ERAS

Updated: Sep 2, 2022

Applying for residency can be a very daunting and time-sensitive task, therefore it is better to prepare ahead of time. Below is a checklist of task and document requirements for the 2022-2023 Main Residency Match Season for residency applicants.

MyERAS Application
  • Complete your MyERAS application. Note: You are not required to complete the MyERAS application in one sitting and are advised to take your time working on each section.

  • Certify and submit your MyERAS application. Your application must be certified and submitted in order to apply to programs. Once you have submitted your MyERAS application, you will not be able to make any changes or updates other than to the information in the Personal Information section. There are no exceptions.

Uploading and assigning documents

1. Personal Statement
  • The personal statement is the most vital document of your residency application. It serves to create a holistic picture of you as an applicant and explains why you should be considered for the residency slot.

  • In general, you should start working on your ERAS personal statement early so that you can have multiple rounds of revisions.

2. Letters of Recommendation (LoRs)
  • Letter of recommendation for residency (LoR) is another essential document of the residency application. It serves as a vital source of information about your unique qualities as a candidate.

  • The admission officers will not review an ERAS application without a minimum of two and a maximum of four LoRs.

  • Make sure you confirm with the writers and give them the Letter Request Form from MyERAS.

  • If you do not waive your LoRs, you may upload them through ECFMG’s OASIS Note: An LoR cannot be assigned to programs until the LoR author uploads it to the Letter of Recommendation Portal (LoRP).

3. Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE or “Dean’s Letter”)
  • Request the Medical School Transcript and MSPE from your medical school

  • If you cannot get an MSPE, you will need to let ECFMG know, so you can upload a placeholder document that explains you were unable to get this document

4. ECFMG Status Report (IMGs only)
5. Photograph

Have a professional take your photograph.

6. Send your USMLE and/or COMLEX-USA

Transcripts Note: Instead of uploading your transcript, you must authorize the release of your transcript before you can assign it to programs.

Applying to Programs
  • Search for programs and add them to your Saved Programs.

  • Assign documents to programs and apply to programs.

Monitoring Your Documents
  • Use the Applicant Checklist and Assignments Report to ensure document assignments for programs are accurate and meet program requirements.

  • Check your Message Center regularly for messages from programs, ERAS, or the ECFMG (IMGs).

  • Check your email, voicemail, and postal mail regularly for communications from programs that may be sent outside the ERAS system.

ERAS will start accepting applications at the beginning of September. We highly recommend submitting your application well before the deadline.
