  • C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital – 348 bed hospital in a quaternary care center, >30,000 ED visits/year, 9 primary care clinics with >100,000 visits/year

  • Longitudinal Second Clinic - 2nd and 3rd year residents select a second continuity clinic in an area of their choice (primary care, sub-specialty care, or research).

  • House Officer Association - Our residents are unionized, have amazing benefits and opportunities to engage in Michigan Medicine wide initiatives.

  • Resident Assistants - All inpatient teams have administrative assistants to help with non-physician tasks.

  • Class size - 21 categorical pediatrics, 4 child neurology, 2 pediatrics-genetics, and 8 medicine-pediatrics residents.

  • Most recent 8 classes come from 55 medical schools and 28 states

  • Each resident is paired with a dedicated faculty advisor, associate program director, and chief resident to provide resources and support.

  • Diverse patient population, spanning 9 continuity clinic locations in SE Michigan – 35% Medicaid, 25% non-white, greater than 70 spoken languages.

  • 11 elective blocks spread over 2nd and 3rd year, selected by residents, not assigned. Almost all weekends are free on these blocks.

  • Every resident completes a mentored scholarly project with departmental support. Many residents publish and present their work locally and nationally.

  • Case conferences and didactic lectures daily –with lunch!

  • Community health and advocacy rotations - residents meet with state legislators, work in a legal aid clinic, learn about community resources.

  • Monthly departmental forum on racism and injustice, with pediatric residents as previous presenters.

  • Fairness, Inclusion, Respect, and Equity (FIRE) Rounds incorporated into departmental Grand Rounds.

  • Residency interest groups include Pediatricians for Black Lives and Michigan Pediatrics Advocacy Collaborative Team (MPACT), with regular inclusion in our educational conference schedule.

  • Each resident rotation, mandatory and elective, has identified specialty-specific DEI learning objectives and recommended readings.
